Alonissos Underwater Museum – The Parthenon of Shipwrecks

The Underwater Museum of Alonissos, also known as the “Parthenon of Shipwrecks,” is the first underwater museum open to visitors in Greece and one of the most thrilling experiences in the Aegean.

Located off the islet of Peristera, across from Alonissos, the museum hosts the wreck of a 5th-century BC merchant ship — one of the best-preserved ancient shipwrecks in the world. Inside, hundreds of intact wine amphorae have been found, likely from Mendi and Peparethos (modern-day Skopelos), shedding light on ancient trade in the Aegean.

Certified divers can explore the site firsthand, while non-divers can enjoy a virtual reality tour at the Underwater Museum Visitor Center in Alonissos town.

This unique experience combines history, adventure, and innovation, making Alonissos a top destination for diving enthusiasts and lovers of underwater archaeology.
